Like our cowherd we follow a creation based management system for our chickens allowing them to express 100% of their chickeness. They are on pasture for 365 days a year with a mobile chicken house that they roost in, lay eggs in (well, hopefully at least!), and it also provides shade from the sun and elements. Their shelter is moved twice a week on the cow pastures following our diary herd. This gives the chickens the ability to feast on fresh pasture grasses, forage for bugs and insects, as well as help to manage the fly population for our cow herd. We supplement their pastured diet with non-gmo grains. The pastured eggs that our chickens produce are a super food full of omega 3’s and vitamins A and E.
In a study done in 2010 from Cambridge University Press pastured eggs were compared to convention eggs and found to contain the following:
- Twice as much vitamin E
- 38 percent higher vitamin A concentration
- Twice as much long-chain Omega-3 fats
- 2.5x more total Omega-3 fatty acids
- Less than half the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3
